17 Hydroxyprogesterone  (17 HYPROG)

Synonyms:  17-OHP
Specimen:  Blood; (1) SST(serum separator), Red (no preservative) or Purple (EDTA) top vacutainer tube.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  0.5 mL
Collection:  If tube other than an SST is collected, transfer serum or plasma to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport. Refrigerate at 2-8°C.
Rejection Criteria:  Improper labeling.

Methodology:  Enzyme immunoassay (EIA)
Test Use:  Markedly elevated in patient's with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (adrenogenital syndrome) due to 21-hydroxylas deficiency; evaluate hirsutism and/or infertility; assess certain adrenal or ovarian tumors with endocrine activity.
Additional Information:  17-OH-progesterone is the substrate for subsequent 21- and 11-hydroxylation, to produce cortisol.
